Daily Office: Thursday
Morning
¶ $2848: That’s how much Mrs Aaron Spelling, of Holmby Hills, California, plans to pay for a spacious pair of penthouses atop the The Century, a new Los Angeles condominium that comes equipped with, among other amenities, Israeli-trained security.
Noon
¶ Deconstruction: Wait! Don’t throw that old steam iron away! Take it apart first, and see what’s inside. (Thanks, kottke.org)
Night

§ $2848. (Total price: circa $47 million. Pourquoi pas?)
As they say, it’s only money. The interesting thing about Mireya Navarro’s story is its journalism. Your assignment: real estate trends in Los Angeles suggest that more people are willing to live in apartment buildings. Woo hoo! (I remember when they started writing this sort of thing about Houston, thirty years ago.) To make your report even more amazing, sex it up by discussing the move of a sixty-two year-old widow from a sprawling mansion (the “Manor” — how cartoonial!) to a more manageable flat (or flat-on-flat). Who ever heard of such a thing? Don’t forget to mention such pertinent real-estate details as the widow’s daughter’s tell-all book, complaining about her “cold and controlling” mother, and her measly inheritance! Garnish with chopped parsley by naming the usual suspects, Robert A M Stern, Jean Nouvel, &c. Â
Meanwhile, in Chinese real estate….

§ Deconstruction. What beautiful photographs. Just think: you have all that stuff in your house. Yes, you, too, could do this yourself. (Right.)
It looks so right and perfect (I almost wrote, “meet and just”) that I want to re-read Jonah Lehrer’s piece about insight in The New Yorker.

§ High Ghoul. We get this catalogue of high-end stuff for McMansions — don’t ask me why. I bought a doormat from them once, and a cordless phone/clock radio that I don’t really know how to use. Every year, it seems, their holiday offerings get more intense. I can’t imagine where they’re going to go from the Celtic graveyard!
